What’s So Great About Golf?

By Glen Peebles -

What’s so great about golf? Golf enthusiasts will say that golf is an excellent skill, which developed over time, which allows the participant the opportunity to relax, participate in a healthy competitive sport, get some fresh air and a little exercise. Golf detractors say that golf is a waste of time and money, offers little real challenge, has little purpose and provides little more exercise than sitting in a lounge chair because golfers spend all afternoon driving from hole to hole in an electric golf cart.

The truth is that golf can be a lot of fun, and you don’t have to be a pro to participate. The trick is to head to the links with people of approximately your skill level. If you golf with someone who consistently shoots 20 or 30 strokes fewer than you, it may not be much fun for either of you. You spend all afternoon being embarrassed about all the golf balls you are hitting out of bounds and losing, and the other golfer gets frustrated watching you hit all your golf balls out of bounds and losing them.

Always golf with friends-people you enjoy hanging out with. And make it a foursome. Some of your least enjoyable golf games may be when you spend all afternoon with a single player stuck in with you to complete your foursome. That is, of course, unless you enjoy meeting new people who outshoot you on every hole. Being with friends is one of the joys of golf. You can all stand around laughing at each other’s drives, chips and putts. It’s harder to do that when you’re playing with someone you’ve never met before in this lifetime.

Whoop and holler as much as possible. It’s half the fun of golfing. If you hang out with a bunch of deadpans, you’ll be guaranteed a miserable day at the course.

Try not to worry much about your score. Unless you’ve got a bet going with someone, you are a pro, or if you are involved in a tournament, your score doesn’t really matter. Besides, your poor score gives the other guys something to rib you about, especially when you know you are really a better golfer than they are.

Even if you don’t think you can clear a lake or a sand trap, you should try it anyway. It gives you more stuff to whoop and holler about when the balls don’t clear them.

Of course, not everyone would agree with this philosophy. Some people are so competitive that they can’t have fun unless they win. Are those really the type of people you want to play golf with? If you do, for sure there won’t be any whooping and hollering going on.

What about clubs? If you are truly not interested in your score, and you don’t golf often, you can rent a set of clubs at most any golf course. If you don’t want to pay out any more cash than necessary, some pals share a single set of clubs. Unless you are a pro, there is no reason to invest in top of the line golf clubs, unless you just want to impress your friends with your investment. Possibly the most expensive clubs you can get are made in Japan by Honma. They sell for about $32,000. Too high? You can find beginner’s sets of clubs for under $200. You can also find barely adequate, decent, good and great clubs for prices ranged anywhere in between. If your main goal at golf is a whooping and hollering good time, you probably ought to consider the lower end of that price range.

If you borrow clubs, you should at least take your own golf balls with you. If you are using borrowed ones, the owner of the golf balls is liable to start lashing out with each newly lost ball. Of course, that gives you one more reason to begin whooping and hollering.
