Steps to Avoiding Injuries in Golf

By Margarit Peggy Brigham -

The human body is a marvelous creation that works for us under the best of conditions, and also under the worst, many of which we bring on ourselves by poor habits. I would like to explore the topic of injuries that are a part of life and a part of the game of golf. To quote Bobby Jones” The most trying time of the year for the golfer is always the time when he comes out of hibernation and begins to try to tune his game back to a point where he can again enjoy it.” For many golfers a poor habit is demonstrated by going from nothing to all out, which may mean excessive repetitive practice in the spring. This creates a lot of tension. If there is no fitness component added for the golf season and pain does arise the poor habit of overcompensating for another injury or pain usually occurs. Anytime you are in pain, pay attention.

First determine if your swing mechanics are sound, if not go to a pro for a tune-up.

Next a golf specific fitness program such as Yoga For Golf is tailored to not only help a golfer take strokes off their game and add yards to their drives. It helps to open and elongate the spine, especially the low back as playing golf, walking and practicing all make the disc’s of the body compress, creating a lot of tension down there. The more open and relaxed a golfer’s body is the more power they have.

Let’s say you are injured. When you feel pain the worst thing you can do is run to the medicine cabinet for pain killers or muscles relaxants and go out a play another game. Pain is your bodies way of speaking to you it is a signal not to cover-up the pain but to get to the bottom of it. When you suppress the pain by masking it, how do you know when the body has had enough? Without the pain threshold more damage is done as you over swing or stretch your body. This creates a viscous circle with not much healing and recovery going on. The most important advice I can extend as a yoga teacher and coach is to find out why your body is in pain? Get your injury diagnosed by a professional, you can’t very well condition the body with golf stretches until you understand what is wrong with it. You may have a serious disc problem in your back that a bending or arching stretch might hurt, if you can’t stretch without sharp pain occurring you probably need chiropractic or physio care to help you get through your injury faster. So just as stretching can increase your range of motion so can proper adjustments. It pays to have a team of professionals to give your golf game the edge, just as the touring pro’s do.

I have become an expert as an Alternative Golf Coach which compliments Conventional Golf Instruction.
I began my company Yoga for Golf in 1997 at the time I was one of the few promoting golf fitness, however what I was most passionate about was helping golfers become happier players, so I studied and add the mind game at the same time. The only ones promoting the mind game at that time where sports psychologist’s. You only have to read some of my YFG website and the interviews with newspapers and golf magazines to discover how much of a pioneer I was. http://www.yogaforgolf.ca
