Golf Balance and Golf Weight Shift Are the First Keys to Building a Consistent and Powerful Swing

Golf balance is crucial to swinging without excess tension. Feeling balance in the swing begins with an athletic stance in which the player’s center of gravity is over the balls of their feet. Most amateurs have their center of gravity too far out over their toes at address.

As the backswing progresses the center of gravity moves over the ball of the right foot (for a right handed golfer) and is stacked over a solid right knee. Letting the hips turn freely and allowing the left heel to come off of the ground in the backswing makes the weight shift graceful and much easier to feel.

The downswing starts with planting the left heel back on the ground and moving weight back to the left leg. As the hips pull the upper body and arms through impact the weight continues to move to the left side. As the club extends down the target line and the shoulders start to catch up with the hips the weight is solidly on the left leg and the right heel starts to pull off the ground.

In the finish position all of the weight has shifted to the left leg and the golfer is in stable balance on the left leg. It should be no problem to bend the right knee, lift the right foot off of the ground and hold it there.

Gary Player often finishes his swing and then takes a step toward the target with his right foot. Try this sometime and you will feel your weight balanced on your left leg as you finish the swing. Play with this drill for a while and your weight shift will naturally start to synchronize and your swing will become more efficient.
