Can You Lower Your Golf Score by Getting Fit For Golf?
By Darren Lawes -
Over the last few years the term Golf Fitness has been the latest buzz word around the golfing community and its easy to see why, with the emergence of a certain ‘Tiger Woods’ and him attributing his phenomenal success to his high levels of golf fitness.
Its not unreasonable to understand why most amateur golfers want to know how they can give their game a boost by paying a bit more attention to their fitness specific to golf.
But the amateur golfer doesn’t have to improve their fitness to ‘athlete’ levels to have an impact on their game.
Recently a scientific study was carried out, the first of its kind, 20 male golfers of different abilities where monitored under scientific conditions over a 5 week period the first 10 golfers took part in a Golf Specific Warm Up and Conditioning Program 4-5 times a week, while the second 10 simply continued with their normal practice routines. After the 5 weeks where up the 2 groups where tested again to check for any improvement, the group that had taken part in the Golf Specific Warm Up and Conditioning Program had increased their club head speed by 7-10 meters per second, equating to a 7 shot reduction in their handicap! The second group had no improvement in their game.
The researchers concluded that ‘While practice is essential for perfecting the golf swing,’ ‘data from this study suggests that sport specific conditioning is also valuable… This study has shown that by warming up immediately prior to play performance is significantly improved, and by performing it 4-5 times a week for five weeks, performance is even further improved.’
Golf Fitness can be broken down into several different areas. Golf Flexibility being linked to the range of motion of the golfer and their particular swing - most amateur golfers do not have a full back swing, this has a big impact on their swing and in particular limiting their club head speed resulting in them not hitting the ball as far as they could, and ultimately loosing shots.
Golfing strength - this is the area of golf fitness that effects the power of your swing also your club head speed which is linked to distance and handicap, more strength and power in your swing will enable you to have a smoother swing and also make your golf swings seem effortless, this has the effect of not only adding distance to your shots but accuracy and consistency both arguably more important than power and distance alone!
In summary improving your fitness specific to golf can have dramatic affects on your game if you apply simple proven strategies. Luckily for the amateur golfer today there is a lot more golf specific fitness knowledge around to help them and they don’t need to be a pro to benefit from it.
