How to Drive the Golf Ball Farther
By Ken McCarron
It’s been the lifelong quest of many a golfer to drive the golf ball farther. Low scores are nice. Dropping twenty foot putts make you feel good. But for most of us, nothing really compares to watching that golf ball fly down the middle of the fairway.
Although there is a problem that often arises with this quest. Along with the excess might we put into our swing comes loss of balance, coordination, timing, and anything else that’s required to drive the ball farther. In short, we slice, we hook, we top, and sometimes miss altogether.
So, what can you do to stay on track?
The first would be to shorten your backswing. I know this seems counterintuitive, so let me explain. If using a typically long and winding backswing has you slicing or hooking the ball more often than not, shortening it will give you more control. And with more control comes better balance and timing, which results in straighter shots.
If you drive the ball 300 yards, but 150 of them are sideways, wouldn’t you drive the ball farther with a 225 yard drive that was straight?
Another tip is to begin rolling your wrists just before contact, and continue through the follow-through. You’ll finish with the palm of your bottom hand facing the ground.
This will change the spin of the ball. Instead of your normal sideways spin, you’ll create over spin which will give you that bounding action down the fairway.
Straighter drives plus over spin equals more distance. Remember, in golf as in much of life, sometimes less is more. Sometimes you must slow down to go faster. Sometimes if you swing a little less, it’ll go a little farther.
These simple tips will save you tons of frustration on the golf course.
